How to Prevent and Treat Urinary Tract Infections?

''Ten Golden Rules for Nurses'' - It’s no secret that hospitals and healthcare are undergoing tremendous changes
A Urinary Tract Infection or UTI refers to an infection affecting any component of the urinary system, i.e. the kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra.
A Urinary Tract Infection or UTI refers to an infection affecting any component of the urinary system, i.e. the kidneys, ureters, bladder or urethra.
UTIs tend to be more common in women than men, with almost all females
suffering from them at least once during the course of their lifetime. In
uncomplicated cases, UTIs can be treated easily using antibiotics.
In complicated cases, especially if the kidneys are affected, longer
courses or medication may be required, depending upon the nature of
complication. The following is a list of symptoms commonly associated with a
Urinary Tract Infection.

A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection
involving the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra. These are the structures
that urine passes through before being eliminated from the body.
The
kidneys are a pair of small organs that lie on either side of the spine at
about waist level. They have several important functions in the body, including
removing waste and excess water from the blood and eliminating them as urine.
These functions make them important in the regulation of blood pressure.
Kidneys are also very sensitive to changes in blood sugar levels and blood
pressure and electrolyte balance. Both diabetes and hypertension can cause
damage to these organs.
Two
ureters, narrow tubes about 10 inches long, drain urine from each kidney into
the bladder.

The bladder is a small saclike organ that
collects and stores urine. When the urine reaches a certain level in the
bladder, we experience the sensation that we have to void, then the muscle
lining the bladder can be voluntarily contracted to expel the urine.
The
urethra is a small tube connecting the bladder with the outside of the body. A
muscle called the urinary sphincter, located at the junction of the bladder and
the urethra, must relax at the same time the bladder contracts to expel urine.
Any part of this system can become infected. As a
rule, the farther up in the urinary tract the infection is located, the more
serious it is.
Urinary tract infections are much more common in
adults than in children, but about 1%-2% of children do get urinary tract
infections. Urinary tract infections in children are more likely to be serious
than those in adults (especially in younger children).

Urinary tract infection is second only to respiratory infection as the most common type of infection.
These infections are much more common in girls
and women than in boys and men younger than 50 years of age.
The reason for
this is not well understood, but anatomic differences between the genders (a
shorter urethra in women) might be partially responsible.
About 40% of women and 12% of men have a urinary
tract infection at some time in their life.

The most commonly experienced symptom across individuals with UTIs is
a burning sensation during urination.
The passage through which urine passes to
be expelled from the body becomes tender due to the infection; when urine goes
through it, the person experiences a painful sensation that mostly doesn’t last
post urination.
Since in a lot of cases UTIs are not present with
signs, if a burning pain is felt during urination, the infection may be strong,
and thus seeking treatment at the earliest is recommended.
People with UTIs also tend to suffer from urinaryurgency. This implies that they will feel the strong urge to urinate more and
more often than usual.
In most cases, a small amount of urine is dispelled
though sometimes, it may just be a false alarm. The frequent urination can be
problematic and embarrassing in social/professional situations.
3. Pain in the Flanks
A distinctive symptom associated with UTIs in a
pain in the flanks or the lower back region of the suffering individual. This
pain may perhaps precede the other discomforts and be misunderstood as a
muscular ache. Taking painkillers is unlikely to provide relief.
The pain in
the flanks is likely to ease only once antibiotic treatment begins taking
effect. Resting and restricting movement may help reduce discomfort.
The quality of urine in UTI victims is differentthan normal. Firstly, with frequent urination, the quantity of urine may be
reduced. Also, the urine may be cloudy and unclear – a condition that may
persist till complete recovery takes place.
In rare cases, the fluid may contain
visible pus or be of a dark colour due to presence of blood; this is
symptomatic of a severe infection, which if left untreated, is highly likely to
cause complications.
5. Pain in the Genital Region
In a few cases, patients have been found to
complain of pain in the genital area, even when they are not urinating. Such
pain is typically a dull, persistent ache which, though not intensely
discomforting, is hard to ignore nonetheless. Once treatment begins however,
this pain is quick to be relieved. If there is no respite within 2 days of
treatment, further investigation is advisable.
In cases where the upper urinary tract gets affected, patients tend to
develop fever and chills. The temperature typically shoots over 100 degrees
Fahrenheit and is accompanied by uncontrollable shivering.
These symptoms,
being somewhat generic, often stand in the way of accurate diagnosis, unless
patients are able to report other symptoms as well. It is recommended that one
suffering from fever and chills be extremely specific in explaining their
symptoms to a physician.
7. Nausea
When a Urinary Tract Infection reaches/affects
the kidney(s), patients are likely to feel nauseous. If the infection is
strong, nausea is likely to arise recurrently, with or without consumption of
food. In a few cases, the nausea may incite puking spells as well.
Taking
anti-vomiting medication may prevent the latter but may not ease the nauseous
feeling. If treatment is begun timely, relief from this symptom is achieved
with the first few dozes alone.
---------
8. Vomiting
If correct diagnosis and appropriate
medication is taken, the vomiting should be stemmed very quickly.
However, if
the vomiting spells recur even one day after the course of medication is begun,
it may be a cause for concern – either the UTI has not been correctly diagnosed
or the infection is more potent than usual and requires stronger/different
medication for quick recovery.
9. Discharge
In a large number of cases, UTIs cause theappearance of discharge from genitals, which is different from regular
discharge in appearance, texture and odour.
Both men and women may have this
abnormal discharge, though it often goes unnoticed, especially in men.
The
discharge is unlikely to persist post recovery but if it does, further medical
investigation is recommended – it may signify a so far asymptomatic
complication, or an entirely different condition altogether.
But if you wipe from back to front after a bowel movement, bacteria can
move from your anal area to the urethra, where infection can start and travel
to the bladder..
